If you are really into safety in the woods, here is the ultimate product for you (assuming you are continuously in cellular coverage in the wilderness). The SPOT, Satellite Personal Tracker was featured at CES 2008. For under $169.00 and $9.99 per month, you get a rugged, waterproof GPS tracker with an emergency button. If you fall and break a leg on the trail, you can push the button and alert emergency services to your location. Did I mention that you need cellular coverage to be able to use the device? Undoubtedly, a useful product, although rumor has it that the GPS isn’t very sensitive. The product might not might not work well in the woods after-all.

Before you run out and purchase a new Magellan Triton, you might want to do a little research on the current product quality. It appears that REI has quietly pulled the Triton due to quality issues. I am betting that the generous REI return policy quickly pointed out the problems with the product. It sounds like the issues are related to firmware issues and missing cables. Buyer beware…

I know the glow of the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show has faded, but a recap of the best products is in order.  The Magellan Triton 2000 is a product that didn’t get much attention because it had been on the market prior to the show.  However, this product won a CES Award for being an innovative product.  Clearly the list of features says it all:  Touch screen, 2 MP camera, voice recorder, compass, and barometer.  We have never seen this list of features in a sport GPS, especially the camera.  So, if you are looking for a GPS that will do almost everything your PDA does, this unit bears a second look.  It also has many smaller brothers and sisters (200, 300, 400, 500, 1500) that might be more kind to your pocketbook.  Via GPSLodge.

I don’t know if you could use this new GPS watch from Garmin for Adventure Mapping, but it would be great for trail running. Although there have been a couple of GPS watches on the market ib the past, they were bulky and chunky. This watch packs the features you need in a watch that you could wear every day of the week. Besides packing similar features to previous ForeRunner devices, the ForeRunner 405 is supposed to automagically transfer your hike or run to your PC when you get within range (I’ll believe it when I see it). Then, you can go online to Garmin Connect and see your track along with stats of your trip. The only complaint that I have about the specs is that you would have to charge this thing almost daily like a cell phone (14 day battery life in standby, 8 hour active GPS use). I guess you can’t have it all — even if you are Garmin.

Are you looking for a GPS that you can use to navigate to the hike and then use on the hike?  Well, here is a device that should do the trick — the Lowrance XOG.  According to their press release in November, this device supports not only standard maps but aerial photos and USGS topo maps.  I haven’t been a big Lowerence fan in the past, but at under $300, I would love to get my hands on this device.

The details just keep pouring out on the Garmin Colorado.  It sounds like they have really changed the way people use the device much like the iPhone has changed the way people use their phones.  This this example.  In the past people had to visualize the topographic maps to see the terrain they were hiking in.  Now the Colorado generates a 3-D view.  Check out the screenshot below:

We have just launched the a new version of TopoShare.org This release is a major one introducing TopoShare.org as a service. This means that the web site www.toposhare.org is just one of the clients that can be used for accessing routes. For now the services are limited to getting routes, which of course also is the most important thing. Later we will add services for posting routes and getting other information from TopoShare.org. Over the next weeks I’ll write posts about how to use the services, but here follows a short introduction.

Feeds of routes can be access in different xml format:
*RSS* is well know and has always included coordinates for the trail head in lat/lon following the W3C standard.
*GeoRSS* is RSS including coordinates following the OGC standard for describing geographical data know as GML (Geographical Markup Language). GeoRSS comes in two versions: Simple and GML. Simple is just like ordinary RSS with coordinates for the trail head in lat/lon but here following the GML standard for point data. GeoRSS in the GML version contains the whole route as line data following the GML standard. This actual means that geographical data describing the whole route is included in the RSS item!
*KML* is Googles Keyhole Markup Language and is another way of describing geo data. KML has become de facto standard.
*GPX* is the GPS Exchange Format and de facto standard for exchanging route data between GPS applications. Read more “here”:http://www.topografix.com/gpx.asp
*TopoShare XML* is our own format and is the most rich of the feeds. This feed contains most of the information we have about the routes.

So how can you use the services? The services works as simple http gets. Here follows some examples:

This give you a GeoRSS Simple feed (GeoRSS simple is default for RSS) for hiking routes in Benton county, Oregon:

http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/rss?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1

What can you use this for? Here comes the great part. GeoRSS feeds can be read by e.g. Google Maps. Just paste the URL string into the search field on maps.google.com and hit search or click “here”:http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/rss?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1&ie=UTF8&z=10&om=1

http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/rss?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1

Google Maps can also read GeoRSS GML. This way you can actual see the route. Add ‘format=gml’ to the URL

http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/rss?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1&format=gml

or click “here”:http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/rss?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1&format=gml&ie=UTF8&z=10&om=1

Also KML can be loaded into Google Maps. KML contains only the geometric - no information about the route. KML can of course also be loaded in Google Earth.

http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/kml?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1

or click “here”:http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=http://www.toposhare.org/services/routes/kml?statefilter[]=41&provfilter[]=003&typefilter[]=1&ie=UTF8&z=10&om=1

After you’ve loaded a feed it can be added to “My maps” by hitting “Save to my maps”. You will need a Google account for this. This way you can keep track of new hiking routes in Benton county, Oregon and take a look at them without visiting the TopoShare.org web site.

The smart thing about the search string is that its identical to the search string for the HTML pages. This means that you can make a search on TopoShare.org and copy the part of the url after the “?” and put it behind one of the service addresses.

I’ll soon follow up on this post with some documentation about the services and tips on how to use them. If you try them out please add a comment about what you think.

More details are now available on the rumored next generation GPS from Garmin. This unit, the “Colorado” looks like it will make the leap from vector mapping to supporting raster maps such as aerial photos.

One of the features that I like the best is that the unit is supposed to come with pre-loaded maps. One of the problems that I have with Garmin is that they make you spend another $100 to turn your GPS into a useable unit with maps.

BassPro.com pre-released the product early in December, although the link now shows, “The product does not exist or is not currently in stock.” According to GPStracklog, BassPro.com listed the following features for the product:

Make navigation simple with Garmin’s Colorado 400 Bluechart GPS Unit. This full-feature, high-sensitivity Garmin GPS unit is pre-loaded with detailed, up-to-date Coastal U.S. marine charts including charts for the Great Lakes, Hawaii and Alaska.

  • Pre-loaded with detailed Coastal U.S. marine charts including Great Lakes, Hawaii and Alaska
  • Unique ”Rock ‘N’ Roller” input device
  • 65K Color TFT display
  • 240 x 400 pixels
  • 16 hours on AA batteries
  • Accepts SD cards for optional downloaded maps
  • 2-axis electronic compass
  • Altimeter
  • Temperature sensor
  • Waterproof
  • ANT™ Communications to wirelessly exchange routes, tracks, waypoints, and geocaches between two units
  • Paperless Geocaching supports display of detailed geocache information
