If you keep track of new GPS products, you have probably noticed that many new GPS units have a chip-set called SiRF Star III. This new chip-set is supposed to have much better reception under tree cover and in urban canyons. I always question the claims of any new product, so I decide to test it out for myself.
I got two identical devices, one with a SiRF Star II (the old chip-set) and one with the SiRF Star III (the new chip-set). I did a hike of old growth trail where the trees are over 200 years old. I carried both devices so they were in identical conditions.
What I found was amazing! The SiRF Start III product lives up to the hype. If you look at the photo below, you can see that the green track (the new SiRF Star III) follows the road very closely the entire way. By contrast the red track (the old SiRF Star II) wanders up to 100 feet off the road and spends much of its time without a fix (shown by long straight straight lines).
So, if you have an older GPS that is based on the SiRF Star II technology that looses signal under heavy tree cover, it might be time to start looking for a new GPS.
