Searches and RSS feeds are the backbone of toposhare.org and every search made on the site can be converted to a custom feed: Search for a route, click the RSS icon, subscribe to the feed in your favorite RSS reader and get a notice when a new route meets the search criteria. For signed in users there are predefined feeds available like ‘routes near my home location’, ‘most popular routes of mine’ etc. Predefined feeds can be read on the new personal homepage, which has a built-in feed reader.

Currently we are working on a contact system for the site, which allows subscribers to add other users as their contacts. The RSS system can feed you new routes from your contacts, which enables you to track the activities of friends or nearby users with the same outdoor interest as yours. The contact system will also introduce ‘TopoMessage’, which enables signed in users to send private messages to each other. This way you can make queries regarding specific routes without using the public comment dialog.

One of things that has always frustrated me with GPS technology was the waiting. I get on my jogging shoes, stretch, get all fired up to run, turn on my GPS and wait. My GPS takes between 60 to 120 seconds to get their first fix. This is a real frustration in a world where we are used to broadband download speeds and instant-on PDA’s.

Fortunately, there are new technologies that can significantly reduce this time to get a lock on the GPS satellites. The system is called AGPS for Assisted GPS. Unfortunately, it requires a cellular data connection – here is why:

It turns out that the reason it takes so long to get your first position fix is that your GPS has to download the precise predicted position of each satellite it uses to determine your location (ephemeris data). The download speed from each satellite is a miserly 50 bits per second and getting the information your GPS needs can take some time. No that is not a typo, the satellite download speed for this data is five-zero (50) bits per second.

An assisted GPS uses a cellular data connection to download this information (typically around 50k). Once downloaded this information gives four days of short fixes.

I have been playing with one of the first PDAs to implement this AGPS technology, the Mio A701. It has a SiRF Star III GPS chipset and I have been amazed at how quickly the GPS gets a fix. With valid satellite data downloaded, I am getting five to ten second fixes even if the unit is off for a couple of days.

If my GPS only takes 5 seconds to get a fix, it may be ready before I even get my shoes tied!
