There is a new trend in cell phones that manufactureres are trying to push — GPS.  The idea is that if they have to provide location services (for emergency call regulations) they might as well make the GPS useful for other tasks.  The real question is, “Will you give up your GPS for a cell phone?”

For those of us that take our GPS into some tough outdoor environments, that could be a problem.  Most cell phones are designed for a home or office environment, not the trail.  My cell phone wouldn’t last very long on a rafting trip!
For others, the small screen isn’t big enough show maps and the form-factor does not lend itself to navigation.  Where do you put your phone when you are mountain biking?  Do you leave it open and attach it to the handle bars?
Only time will tell whether cell phones become the next big thing in outdoor navigation, but in the mean time, I am sticking to my trusty GPS.

One of joys of capturing all that great trail information with your GPS is that you have to do something with it after the trip. There are many programs out there to convert your information from your GPS into a readable format called GPX (GPS Exchange Format). Some come with your GPS (like Garmin MapSource) and others require a license fee.

The one program that stands out as the classic GPX converter is, G7toWin. G7toWin is a free download from the GPS Information site. This program will work with Garmin, Magellan, and Lopwrance GPS units.

Download the program and try it out. Even though the interface is stripped down, it gets the job done. First, select File > Configuration and select the type of GPS you have. Then select GPS > Download from GPS > All. Assuming your GPS is attached to your computer, the program will download the data and give you the option of viewing a text version of all the points from the trip. When you are happy with the data you see, select File > Save as, select the GPX format from the Save as file type: dropdown, and click Save. You now have a file you can upload to TopoShare.org.

The only drawback to using this free program is that you aren’t able to see your route on a map prior to uploading it. This can make it difficult to make sure you are uploading the correct route.
