What is it about GPS maps that are so captivating? I find that I enjoy a hike with a GPS much more than one without, have you ever though of why? Some people have told me that it is simply the magnetism of a gadget. I have now had a GPS for 5 years, and the gadget fascination should have worn off by now. I think the reason a GPS is so wonderful for outdoor lovers is that you get more from your hike. Instead of opening the paper map only when you are at a trail intersection, you can learn about what is around you every second of the trip. You can see the upcoming climb, or the spring just off the trail. Ultimately it gives you more of what took you into the outdoors to begin with – the exhilaration of finding something new.
