I used to be envious of Lewis and Clark because of all the new territory they were able to explore when the country was new. However, I am beginning to change my mind.

In a few short years (about 5) GeoCaching has become a popular sport. Hundreds of thousands of new places to visit have appeared on the internet like mushrooms after a storm.

Adventure mapping is a new activity that combines the excitement of exploration and the love of maps (A little bit of gadget fun is thrown in for good measure). Adventure mapping allows the average person to find unknown new adventure spots without purchasing books or paying for expensive internet subscriptions. A vacation can turn into a goldmine of new activities with the information provided by TopoShare.org.

With all these great new places to explore, I am starting to think that the opportunity for exploration is even greater today than it was for Lewis and Clark — it was just different.

How long will it be before Adventure Mapping (Finding adventure locations with your GPS) becomes as popular as GeoCaching? The box hiding sport has only been around for about six years and already has over 250,000 GeoCaches around the world. On the flip side, how may trails, rocks, lakes, mountains, and rivers have people gone to for adventure? There must be more than a quarter of a million. In 2002, 1/3 of the population or 73 million people went hiking at least once in the USA
(Ref). There must be many thousands of trails to support that many people. Today, people take vacations to find GeoCaches in new locations. Wouldn’t it be great to take a vacation and find maps of all the adventure sport locations near your destination? Ultimately, Adventure Mapping has the potential to even surpass the popularity of GeoCaching — it is just up to you to make that happen.
