I purchased $400 on a new GPS last year — expecting it to revolutionize my hiking experience. It has a color screen, mapping, and the new WAAS receiver.

The problem is that my new GPS really doesn’t do anything for me that my sub $100 unit did. The maps are 25 years old — showing a wetland where my house now sits. Trails I usually hike don’t even show up. I still have to painstakingly create routes on the computer before downloading them to my unit.

What I really need is a way to download routes that have been walked by a human. What I really want is a web site that posts tracks for trails from thousands of other users. I want software that can store all my trips for futher reference and download.
